Focus Sectors

The lack of availability of essential infrastructure is a major obstacle preventing Africa from realizing its full economic growth potential. While exciting opportunities exist in all infrastructure and resource areas, AIDA has chosen to focus on three distinct sectors: Construction, Transportation and Energy, where AIDA founders and partners bring significant experience and value for the benefits of African private or public project developers, local communities and international businesses.

Rapid population growth and urbanization has placed enormous challenges on existing, and often obsolete and poorly maintained, infrastructure and resources. In many African countries, infrastructure limitations—notably in power and logistics—inhibit productivity. Studies, such as those of the Infrastructure Consortium of Africa (ICA), have shown that poor road, rail and seaport infrastructure adds 30-40% to the costs of goods traded among African countries. Transport and mobility within cities is an increasing concern, as public transportation systems have lagged economic developments, creating traffic congestion and pollution.

Similarly, population growth has fueled the need for housing aimed at all social groups of society. The expanding middle-income group is also driving consumption demand, which in turn is increasing the need for quality commercial centers.
On the industrial and research sides, countries want to revive their industrial footings, set up special zones, and attract foreign investors.
